Nomadic Nests

Nomadic Nests is a full stack single page web app emulating Airbnb. Seeded with travel spots from the my wife and I's road tripping, it allows users to search for listings and create bookings.

The site has a fluid navigation interface that embraces React’s declarative structure by using React Router; lifecycle methods initiate AJAX HTTP requests to fetch required data if it isn’t threaded, allowing all URLs to be a point of entry and shareable.

I created it with a Ruby on Rails MVC backend that uses Active Record to communicate with a PostgreSQL database; both model and database level validations ensure data quality while Active Record’s query building defends against injection attacks.

The search bar uses eagerly loaded data that displays as searchable options that match user input. An additional filter bar displays modals for each filter field and updates Redux state to include constraints in HTTP requests.

Google Maps API is integrated into the site, including map markers responsive to filter criteria and linked to detail pages. User authentication is created using BCrypt to hash and salt passwords, and SecureRandom to generate session tokens. Uploaded photos are stored using AWS S3 cloud services to affordably reduce server load, allowing for future scalability.

Color Clench

Color Clench is a mobile friendly brain teaser game that tests and trains your ability at divided attention.

Users touch or click intersections, depicted above as gray circles, to change the route. The objective is to direct moving circles to their matching colored square by toggling intersections as the circles move. Score as many correct colors as you can, or increase the difficulty settings, to get a high score!

Perhaps the most interesting part of the game is that there is virtually unlimited variation in gameplay; its algorithm generates a level each time the user starts a game, as seen above to the right. One of the difficulty settings (size) determines the number of leaf nodes, or squares, that the algorithm targets for creating a binary node tree.

It then uses a breadth first search to randomly generate the tree. Each node is associated with a point on the screen, and points to the next node. Nodes with zero children are the leaf nodes, nodes with one child are continuations of the track, and nodes with two children are the intersections.

Kids Work

Kids Work is an original full stack single page web app providing incentives for task completion in a parent/child relationship.

I developed a scalable and efficient backend by utilizing nested schema in Mongoose modeling that takes advantage of non-relational data storage in MongoDB to achieve instant O(1) lookup time for querying account data.

A unique authentication pattern is created by using passport with custom jwt payloads; a family account includes privileged login credentials for parents that have access to supervisory features, while child accounts only access pertinent features.

This was a team project, utilizing Git to develop branched features concurrently and merge into a central repository.
